I'm a published wedding and portrait photographer located in a small town outside of Charlottesville. In addition to capturing beautiful images, I love spending time with my family, am freakishly good at word games (Hey Wheelmobile!), love an ice cold can of Coke or Dr. Pepper, know every line to Hocus Pocus and can never pass up a Chick-fil-A waffle fry or a trip to HomeGoods.
If you’re like me, you spend weeks flipping stations to avoid Christmas music until it’s seasonally appropriate. For instance, no one wants to rock around the tree in early November. I’m a firm believer in allowing Thanksgiving to be complete before getting into the Christmas spirit. However, once the turkey is cleaned up, it’s full on Christmas time. And there’s nothing I enjoy more than my favorite Christmas songs. They aren’t traditional by any means, but I still love them so here they are:

There’s just something about the southern rock vibe of this song that I love. It’s not overly sappy, which some Christmas songs are, but it gets the point across.
2. Baby Please Come Home–Darlene Love
[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UV8x7H3DD8Y]
I love this song and it must be the original, sorry Mariah.
3. The Angels Cried–Allison Krauss and Alan Jackson
[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wjrM2YJX3kM]
The song itself is beautiful and I love that it’s a nod to the true meaning of Christmas, but there’s also something about their voices on it that I can’t get enough of. The video is very early nineties, but they harmonize in all the right ways.
4. Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays–‘N Sync
[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wKj92352UAE]
You cannot be a child of the nineties and not jam out to this song every time you hear it. It’s just not allowed.
5. All I Want for Christmas–Mariah Carey
[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yXQViqx6GMY]
Mariah Carey is the queen of Christmas with this song. No one does it better than she does. Just from those first few notes, you know exactly what the song is and she kills it.
6. This Christmas–Boyz II Men
[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hgtO1AQo90E]
It’s not Christmas without a little soul and these gentlemen bring the soul. I also really love, “Let It Snow,” but it just doesn’t feel right in this 70 degree Christmas weather we’re having.
7. This Christmas–Sinclair
[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iwA_BoAsdKw]
I actually just found this one recently thanks to an Amazon Prime Christmas station and quickly added it to my favorites. It has a nice upbeat vibe, which is somewhat unusual in the world of Christmas music.
8. Blue Christmas–Elvis
[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L9-PN1sftaI]
I’m also really partial to the Porky the Pig version, even though Elvis will always have the crown on this song.
9. Christmastime is Here–Charlie Brown
[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GPG3zSgm_Qo]
It’s not Christmas until Charlie Brown and Linus are walking through the snow with this song playing in the background.
10. Hard Candy Christmas–Dolly Parton
[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bvK1F6bUrzU]
Hands down, favorite Christmas song ever! When this one comes on, I turn it all the way up. And if it doesn’t come on, no worries, because I have it on my iPod.
What are your favorite Christmas songs? Anything I should check out?
