I'm a published wedding and portrait photographer located in a small town outside of Charlottesville. In addition to capturing beautiful images, I love spending time with my family, am freakishly good at word games (Hey Wheelmobile!), love an ice cold can of Coke or Dr. Pepper, know every line to Hocus Pocus and can never pass up a Chick-fil-A waffle fry or a trip to HomeGoods.
Myeshia and Devin aren’t high school sweethearts, they’re middle school sweethearts. These two met at John J. Wright Middle School in band. Does it get any sweeter than that? When Myeshia contacted me with the idea to have a portrait session at the place they first met, I was excited! It’s not often that two people meet in middle school, grow up and get married and to go back where it all started was a no-brainer.
John J. Wright isn’t a middle school anymore. It now houses a museum and alternative education, but we were able to get permission to shoot there and on the day we arrived, it was overrun with parks and recreation youth basketball players–kind of fitting for a former middle school. With the gym off limits, we were able to visit the cafeteria, upstairs hallway and a variety of outdoor spots around the grounds. Sadly, the band room where it all began is no longer a band room, but the same middle school vibes lingered. Have you ever been back to school years after you left? It’s kind of an odd feeling and though I didn’t attend John J. Wright for school, I had been there for some other events. It’s like stepping back in history. If you haven’t done it, you should. It’s always nice to go back to some place you haven’t been in awhile and for Myeshia and Devin it was extra special since it’s the place they met.
I enjoyed seeing Myeshia and Devin take a walk down memory lane. They shared stories from their years at John J. Wright including band stories and having to run around the football field on warm days, the latter of which definitely didn’t make me miss middle school gym class.
I’m so glad I was able to capture these photos for them and highlight the place where it all began. Enjoy some favorites below.
